Are You A Dialysis Patient?

For many members of our community, kidney dialysis is an essential part of their continued health maintenance. Careful administration of the dialysis procedures with safe dialysis products is required for patient safety. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) oversees medical providers to assure that patients suffering from kidney problems are not exposed to dialysis products that can harm them.

What Type Of Harm Can Come From Dialysis?

On June 14, 2012, a New York Times article stated that the FDA was investigating the company Fresenius for failing to inform its patients and customers “of a potentially lethal risk connected to one of its products …”

On June 27, 2012, the FDA issued a recall for two Fresenius products used in hemodialysis, NaturaLyte and GranuFlo. Fresenius’ hemodialysis machines dominate the market, and these two drugs are widely used across North America. The potential combination of inappropriately set machines and undisclosed contents or effects of the drug is believed to have caused serious effects for many hemodialysis patients.

According to the FDA, the recall is “the most serious type of recall and involves situations in which there is a reasonable probability that use of these products will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.” Apparently, Fresenius did not immediately warn dialysis centers or home users of the dangers of its product until March 2012.

What Do I Do Now If I Am A Dialysis Patient?

Your medical records may indicate what products were used for your dialysis treatment. You may also get that information from your dialysis center. Lawsuits protecting dialysis patients harmed by Fresenius have already been filed.
