“Third place” is not a bad spot to be, if you’re talking about Olympic medals. If you’re talking about the number of distracted drivers on the road, however, that’s not at all a good thing.
Louisiana drivers are among the worst in the nation when it comes to allowing themselves to be distracted behind the wheel. Distracted driving has now eclipsed impaired driving when it comes to causing car accidents.
How can you avoid being part of the problem?
While the most recent statistics were gained by analyzing smartphone data, distracted driving isn’t always related to phone use. You should put your phone on “Do Not Disturb” mode – or just put it away. However, you should also:
- Adjust all your controls as soon as you get in the car. Set your seat position, mirrors, climate control and music before you put the vehicle in gear.
- Set up your GPS before you start driving. Program your route before you hit the road, and use voice guidance so that you don’t have to look at the scene.
- Eat and drink before you go. That cup of coffee or breakfast sandwich may seem convenient, but they require you to take a hand off the wheel and occupy too much of your attention.
- Put some boundaries on your passengers. Ensure that children and pets are secure in their seats and ask adult passengers to be quiet when you’re in busy traffic.
- Manage your emotions. You don’t want your mind on anything but the road. If you’re upset, angry or stressed, take time to compose yourself before you drive.
Distracted driving accidents are unpredictable. If you’re injured by a distracted driver, it may be time to seek legal guidance.
