What is fatigued driving?

On Behalf of | Feb 25, 2025 | Car Accidents

Drivers can only drive safely if they’re well-rested and can focus on driving. Fatigued driving claims hundreds of lives each year, and each one of those deaths could have been prevented if the driver had gotten rest before getting behind the wheel.

Many people don’t fully realize how much being drowsy can impact their ability to operate a vehicle. A person who hasn’t slept in 18 hours has effects similar to someone who’s legally intoxicated with a blood alcohol concentration of .08%. While that’s an extreme case, because most people won’t go that long without sleep, it shows just how devastating fatigue can be.

Lack of sleep is only one cause of fatigued driving

Lack of sleep is one of the primary causes of fatigued driving, but it’s not the only cause. Many medications, including pain relievers and antihistamines, can cause drowsiness. These are commonly sold over the counter and as prescription drugs. The labels will typically state that drowsiness may occur and that the person taking the medications shouldn’t operate heavy machinery.

Driving at a time when the person would typically be sleeping can also lead to fatigued driving. The body’s circadian rhythm dictates when natural energy slumps will occur, so drivers should avoid getting on the road during those.

Victims of fatigued driving crashes often need considerable medical care. This can be costly, so those individuals may choose to seek compensation for the financial damages caused by the crash. Working with someone familiar with the situation and the applicable laws may make it easier for these victims.
