What should I do in a hit and run accident?

As a driver in New Orleans, being involved in any kind of accident is usually stressful. Hit and run accidents are particularly so, as you may not be able to find the responsible motorist in order to file an accident claim and receive compensation for damage. However, there are steps you can take to seek justice while also preserving the safety of yourself and others. State Farm offers the following advice to help you do just that.

Stay on the scene

While it may be tempting to go after the fleeing driver, you definitely should refrain from doing so. When in pursuit of the vehicle that struck your own you’ll be putting yourself and others in danger. Additionally, you may be charged when police arrive at the accident. Leaving the scene is not permitted, unless it’s to receive medical treatment for your injuries.

Speak with witnesses

While waiting for law enforcement to arrive, be sure to speak with any bystanders. Witness testimony can be very valuable when making an accident claim, as it can provide unbiased information on what exactly occurred. Also, bystanders may be privy additional information that can help police track down the responsible party.

Collect as much info as possible

You can also provide any information you have on the fleeing vehicle to the police. Even if you were unable to take down the full license plate number, partial information can be useful. This is especially true when provide the make, model, and color of the vehicle as well. The location where the accident took place is also helpful, as is the direction the vehicle was traveling in.
